RICHMOND, Virginia (WRIC) – This is the time of year when people seek the thrill of a spooky story – and what could be more spooky than a true ghost story? There is no shortage of hauntings around the historic Commonwealth and plenty of guided tours to show you the spookiest places in your city. To make it easier to meet one of Virginia’s true appearances, we’ve compiled a list of the best haunted tours across the state so you can plan spooky road trips with ease.


Strange Nights Ghost Tour

This 1.5-hour walking tour will take thrill seekers through a variety of haunted places in Richmond. This tour takes a more theatrical approach with guides dressed in period costume with special effects makeup, playing characters from the 1800s or 1920s.

The content of these tours is considered mature and any child under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. $ 16 per person in line or at the ticket office located at the 17th Street Farmer’s Market; credit card only. Find more information online here.

Richmond’s lairs

This company offers ghost tours in several different locations, from Shockoe Bottom to Franklin. They also have a haunted pub tour, where you can taste the spirits while learning them, and TukTuk tours for people who don’t really feel like walking to experience the region’s darkest stories.

Ghosts of Richmond

Discover some of Richmond’s most haunted places on this haunted walk through Shockoe Bottom and Church Hill. The visit is family-friendly and “will bring history to life, through death”.

Tours meet at 17th Street Farmers Market, between Franklin and Main Street. $ 24.99 per person plus fees; you can also add an additional 30 minutes and four more tales for an additional $ 5. Petersburg Haunts Ghost Walking Tour

See some of the oldest houses on the High Street, as well as the ghosts that haunt them.

Tours are on Fridays and Saturdays as well as Halloween. They meet at the Exchange Building and the Petersburg Visitors Center at 15 West Bank St., Petersburg. Tickets cost $ 15 and can be purchased online here.

Colonial ghost tours

Colonial Ghost Tours will not only take you through the cemeteries and haunted sites of Williamsburg, but also offer visitors the opportunity to hunt ghosts.

Haunted williamsburg

This is the official Colonial Williamsburg Ghost Tour that will take you to areas other tours cannot. Guides will guide you by candlelight through some of the area’s most haunted places.

The tour starts at the Play House Stage on Palace Green and is recommended for children ages 8 and up. There is also Ghost Walk Jr. available for the youngest. Tickets are $ 12 to $ 19 and can be purchased in line.

The original ghost tour

This company boasts of being the oldest ghost tour in Virginia and the second oldest in the country. They have five options available for thrill seekers, including the Original Ghosts of Williamsburg, Yorktown Hallowed Ground, and the Haunted River Cruise from James Island.

Ghosts of Neptune

This tour will take guests along the promenade using landmarks to teach people about Virginia Beach’s darkest history, including pirates, witchcraft, and those lost in the sea. With so many tragedies in its past , there’s a reason the city still has spirits roaming its shores.

Virginia Beach Haunted Walking Tour

This candlelight walk will take you through the darker side of the city’s maritime history. Stops on this tour include the Norwegian Lady Statue and the Virginia Beach Boardwalk.

Legends of Main Street: A Tour of the Suffolk Ghost

A costumed guide will take you down Main Street to tell you about Suffolk legends and the unsolved mysteries that haunt the city to this day.

Haunted Tours of Fredericksburg

Guides dressed in historic attire will take you back in time to the terrifying history that haunts the streets of Fredericksburg to this day. History is not dead when the ghosts of past battles still roam the land on which they died.

Tours run from September 25 to October 3 and begin in the parking lot of the Fredericksburg Visitor Center located at 706 Caroline Street. Ticket prices are not displayed online. You can find more information and purchase tickets by calling 540-760-5450.

Witches, Ghosts, Thieves, Murders and Chaos Tour

This is a private tour by horse-drawn carriage. Guests will learn about Fredericksburg’s spookiest stories, including the Ghost of Chatham, Women in White, and more.

Alexandria Colonial Tours Ghost Tour and Cemetery

This six-block candlelight tour will be led by a costumed guide sharing the unsolved mysteries, ghost stories, and legends of the area.

Middleburg Ghost Tours

Claiming Middleburg as one of Virginia’s most haunted places, this walk will show guests some of the city’s most haunted houses on the way to historic downtown.

Tours run most Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and meet at the municipal grounds on South Liberty Street in Middleburg. Tickets cost $ 30 per person and can be purchased online here.

Occoquan Spirits: Haunted Pub Crawl & Ghost Tour

Stroll through some of the haunted places in town starting at a restaurant with a ghost they call “Ted”. The website warns that while some guests may feel cold spots, hear, or even be touched by a spirit, none of the ghosts are malicious.

Appalachian Ghost Walks

From Abingdon, Va. To Gatlinburg, Tennessee, this company offers guided lantern tours to towns in the mountain range. They also offer walks and trips to Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

The Haunted Nights of Bacon Castle

For two nights, only guests can experience the Old House’s haunted past with ghost stories, haunted tours, a bonfire, and hot apple cider. You can either roam the grounds freely or join a tour led by a paranormal investigator.

Tours take place at Beacon’s Castle on the 465 Bacons Castle Trail in Surry and are offered on October 16 and 30. Tickets are $ 15 to $ 40 and can be purchased online here.
