Mariam Bint Mohammed Almheiri visits the Panama pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai.
Mariam Bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, visited the Panama pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, on the theme “An Introduction to Endless Opportunities in Panama”.
Any Lam Chong, director of the Panama Pavilion, welcomed Mariam Bint Mohammed Almheiri and accompanied her on the tour.
Thanks to a virtual reality cruise on the iconic Panama Canal, the Minister experienced a journey through the artificial wonder that links the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and connects the two Americas to the rest of the world. As a major sea passage for international maritime trade, the Panama Canal provides an ideal gateway for businesses from the United Arab Emirates to Latin America.
The Minister discussed topics related to environmental protection with officials of the Panama pavilion. They informed her of the country’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), in which it commits to reducing emissions from its energy sector by 11.5% by 2030 and 24% by 2050 by compared to the status quo.
These reductions represent savings of 10 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent accumulated between 2022-2030 and 60 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent accumulated between 2022-2050.
In addition, Panama plans to restore 50,000 hectares of national forests, which will help absorb around 2.6 million tonnes of CO2 emissions by 2050.
Almheiri learned about the nature-based solutions Panama is using to combat climate change and the country’s efforts to protect the environment in the Panama Canal watershed and coastal and marine areas.
The discussion also focused on the management of marine litter.
Mariam Bint Mohammed Almheiri welcomed the participation of Ramón E Martínez de la Guardia, Minister of Trade and Industry of Panama, and Erika Mouynes, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Panama, in Visions and Journeys, a series of talks inspirations tackling gender stereotypes and showcasing ideas for an equal future at the Women’s Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai.
The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) was created in February 2006 under the name of Ministry of Environment and Water. Within the framework of its redefined perimeter, the ministry assumed a dual mandate.
At the national level, it aims to strengthen the UAE’s efforts to preserve the environment and promote dietary diversity in line with the nation’s aspiration to become a key benchmark for sustainable development.
Globally, MOCCAE joins international stakeholders in the fight against climate change and showcases the UAE’s innovative achievements in the sector on thought leadership platforms around the world.
Earlier Thursday, Mariam Bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, delivered a speech at the ABB Seminar on Innovation and Learning for Sustainable Solutions at the Swedish Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai.
Co-hosted by the Swedish and Swiss governments and the Swedish-Swiss multinational company ABB, the high-level event drew the participation of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, as well as regional officials and representatives of the Swiss and Swedish governments.
These included Anna Hallberg, Swedish Minister for Foreign Trade and Nordic Affairs, Liselott Andersson, Swedish Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Massimo Baggi, Swiss Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, and Jan Thesleff, Commissioner General of the Committee for the participation of Sweden in Expo 2020 in Dubai.
Almheiri said: “From climate change and water scarcity to air pollution and waste management, every challenge can be turned into an innovation-driven opportunity that unleashes socio-economic benefits. and substantial environmental. However, to realize these benefits, we need to scale up innovation ecosystems that involve multiple stakeholders at national, regional and global levels. The Minister said: “We are using innovation to tackle all aspects of the climate crisis. The Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate or AIM for Climate is one of the best examples. This global initiative, led by the United Arab Emirates and the United States, aims to mobilize investments in agricultural innovation and R&D that are essential to mitigate climate change and feed the growing global population. With 35 member countries and $ 4 billion in increased investment to date, AIM for Climate is the kind of bold initiative we need to harness innovation globally to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. .
She noted that in the fight against climate change, the development and adoption of emerging technologies to reduce emissions and increase energy efficiency is the decisive factor for success.
She said: “In our drive to achieve net zero by 2050, we will harness the combined expertise of our academic institutions and major industry players to create practical innovative solutions that reduce the carbon footprint of each sector.
Sichuan Day AT China Pavilion: The “Sichuan Day” of the Chinese pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai on December 15, 2021, was officially inaugurated. Sponsored by the People’s Government of Sichuan Province of China, the event has been successfully held simultaneously in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and Chengdu, Sichuan, China, both online and offline.
