A photographer from Katowice won first place in a prestigious international competition for the most impressive images captured on a smartphone.

Part-time graphic designer and photographer Dominika Koszowska took first place in the annual World’s Top Mobile Photographer 2020 competition organized by One Eyeland, the results of which were announced on 15e July 2021.

This award marks the second time Koszowska has been named the world’s best mobile photographer, the first time in 2019 when she won first place at the Mobile Photography Awards, the world’s oldest international competition for mobile photography and art. .

The talented photographer, who is currently doing her doctorate at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, attributes her interest in photography to her grandfather, who first introduced her to the secrets of traditional photography.

She told TFN: “It all started in 2014, when my current phone broke and I had to buy a new one.

“I realized he had a pretty nice camera and started taking pictures with it.

“My son liked them and he found a mobile photography exhibition where you could win a smartphone and he pestered me to apply with my photos and I finally gave in and applied, not thinking about it anymore and never thinking that I would win. But I did.

“Then came another photo contest, again found by my son who again encouraged me to apply, this time the prize was tickets to an international soccer match in Brazil. I won that too and we went to Brazil for the game.

“After that, I started to get more interested in mobile photography. There was a module in my university course in photography and I took that and started honing my art and taking pictures with greater awareness, and that’s how it all started.

She has now won over 100 international awards and honorable mentions in photography exhibitions, including the National Geographic Traveler Competition and accolades at the International Photography Awards.

The majority of its winning images to date have been taken on various models of Sony Xperia tri-lens smartphones.

She said: “While I love to photograph all types of subjects, my favorites are portraits. Smartphones these days have a 2x optical zoom which allows me to take portraits that don’t distort the subject’s face.

“I also like to capture images of fleeting moments, for example things that happen in the street, I like to rediscover these moments”.
