Palestinian assaulted by policeman in filmed incident

A Palestinian was attacked by a policeman on Tuesday evening after apparently reporting another incident of police brutality that occurred against him earlier that same night.

The incident was filmed and circulated on social media, among a series of unrest that took place at Damascus Gate on Tuesday evening.

According to an eyewitness, “a quarrel developed between Jews and Palestinians, during which the policeman approached the young man, spoke calmly to him, then suddenly hit him on both knees.”

The Israeli Police Investigation Department has opened an investigation into this incident.

“In recent days and last night a number of criminals have arrived in the Damascus Gate area and have started to revolt, including throwing stones at the police, injuring a policeman,” a statement read. of the police. “Due to their involvement in the public disorder incidents, a dispersal order was issued, after which the police acted to push back those who did not obey the order, including the person who appears in the documentation. The case described will be examined and dealt with accordingly.

The incident began when Palestinian rioters started throwing stones, lighting fires and attacking Jewish passers-by. The arrival of Jews carrying Israeli flags at the scene, which the young Palestinian said was intended to provoke them, escalated tensions until the police arrived.

The worrying rise in violence in Jerusalem culminated in the recent clashes at the Damascus Gate, which is near the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of east Jerusalem, which was at the forefront of political and military clashes last May. Various skirmishes and clashes have continued to ravage Jerusalem since the military operation last May.
