Program of PEACE to Install Ring Doorbell Cameras in Elmira This Week | WETM

ELMIRA, NY (WETM) – The PEACE program and Elmira Police will begin distributing new Ring Doorbell cameras in Elmira neighborhoods this week. In June, the two organizations announced the new collaboration, urging community members to report criminal activity or emergencies through its new partnership with Ring.

“We’re trying to get it ready before Christmas,” said Willie Owens, co-founder of the PEACE program.

Rings Neighbors app allows users to share real-time information, photos and videos of local criminal incidents so that other residents can stay informed.

The Neighbors app uses your address to create a radius around your home. If someone shares an alert on the app regarding crime or safety in that radius, you will receive a notification on your phone and tablet. Conversely, if you share an alert on the app regarding a crime or security issue in your area, your neighbors will also receive a notification on their phones and tablets. You can then comment on those alerts to provide additional information about local issues, give tips on avoiding affected areas, share photos or videos to help neighbors stay alert, and more.

You can reduce your radius to focus only on hyper-local issues. Or if you live in a more rural location, you can expand your radius to include nearby communities and landmarks.

According to Lt. William Solt, the Elmira Police Department can view residents’ messages and “intervene” with relevant security updates or alerts.

You don’t need a Ring device to join Neighbors. Anyone with a smartphone can download the app to receive updates and share information.
