Vote Gonzales to put speed cameras in postponed school zones
GONZALES — The City of Gonzales says speed is increasingly becoming an issue, especially in one specific area.
“There are some school zones here that we’ve noticed up in some speeding,” Mayor Barney Arceneaux told WBRZ on Monday.
In order to force motorists to slow down, the city hopes to set up speed cameras in school zones at the city limits. The mayor says this could unfortunately mean more tickets given out to drivers.
“It’s a way to slow down traffic. You hate to issue citations, but these days it’s the way to go,” Arceneaux said.
WBRZ first reported this plan two weeks ago. A vote was set for Monday, but it was delayed to settle the fine print.
One question that needs to be clarified is which court would hear the case if a driver wanted to challenge a speed camera ticket.
The mayor says he supports the proposal and believes it will keep children safe in school zones.
“There’s still kids walking, there’s still kids riding bikes, and that’s the number one thing. I don’t want to hear anybody get hurt or, God forbid, even get hurt. kill,” Arceneaux said.
Gonzales Police Chief Sherman Jackson told WBRZ on Monday that he still supports the ordinance.
Arceneaux says he thinks the details of the order should be finalized within the next two weeks. He also thinks it will pass when it finally comes to a vote.
