York High Grad Wins Second Place in Hearst Journalism Program Competition


Nate Swanson, a 2018 York Community High School graduate, has been recognized as one of America’s foremost university photographers.

Swanson is the photojournalism finalist in the prestigious national competition sponsored by the Hearst Journalism Program announced in June, winning $ 1,500.

Earlier this year, Swanson also received $ 1,000 for second place in a separate photo contest from Hearst.

A rising senior at Ohio University, Swanson is director of photography at award-winning student publication, The Post.

This summer, Swanson is an intern in Washington, DC, for Deutsche Welle, the German global media company. His work has been shown internationally. The internship was hosted by the EW Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University.

Swanson was a prolific photographer during his years at York Community High School. He said he enrolled in Ohio University because of his strong reputation in photojournalism.
